How do I determine an ETF's performance?

I've been wondering why people choose VDHG over IVV? I understand VDHG is more diversified but the MER (0.27%) is is so much higher than IVV (0.04%). Performance of IVV has been better then VDHG recently as well (but probably due to all the money printing going on).

Why do people choose VDHG over IVV? 

I am very new to investing. I began with the long term in mind - passive income, retirement etc. and all my reading has been focussed on that. What investment strategies would you recommend for a 3 to 5 year goal - such as for buying a car, future home renovations etc. If there are good resources, you recommend I read - I am most happy to do that as well.

Is it that the AU shares are funds held by brokers in Aus and the US one is US brokers? Is there a better option for an Aus investor? What are the tax implications of investing in US EFTs over Aus ones?

I currently hold shares in various Australian ETFs including VDHG, NDQ, ETHI, etc. My question is whether I should also be investing in US ETFs such as VOO. If these ETFs are made up of mostly the same/similar companies, are there any other benefits in choosing to go with US and AUS ETFs? Thanks!
